What makes a character stronger is their popularity.
If the reception is good and everybody draw, write fics or make a model of that character, it shines really bright and catches even more people's eyes, helping to bring even more people into the club and the number of fanarts the character has grows, until a whole fandom is drawing them. The character is then easily remembered once you mention their name and as long as new people join into drawing/making art of said character, it remains powerful. When it reaches the point people stop drawing, the character fades away.

It's like the people producing fanworks are little lightbulbs. The more, the brighter them shine.

Let's take Miku and Meiko. Despite Meiko being there for way more time, you see way more fanworks with Miku instead. Something that Miku has catches people's eyes and they either buy and make covers with her or draw her or make models and fics.

But exactly what makes people go for Miku when making fanworks rather than Meiko?

And let's suppose I had a character I liked that isn't popular and I wanted it to be. How should I proceed? Would it be wise to get a group of people that either liked the character or could take requests to draw it and put them together and have a particular week in which people would mass post their fanarts of said character, like some sort of event that would be repeated with certain frequence? I don't know, I can only think of that.

How does a character become so popular, anyway, I wonder?
